£15.99
‘Pontifex Maximus’ was a title for all Roman Emperors and originally meant ‘Greatest Bridge Builder’. Two bridges in the Empire were named after Emperor Hadrian (Pons Aelius): one in Rome, Ponte Sant’Angelo today, and an older one at Newcastle on the site of the Swing Bridge.
