£923m Investment in Tyne Clean Energy Proposed

14th May 2025

LS Eco Advanced Cables, a joint venture between Global InterConnection Group and Korean cable manufacturer LS Group, has announced plans to invest nearly £1bn in constructing a high-voltage direct current cable facility at the Port of Tyne’s Tyne Dock.

The cables will trasmit renewable energy from offshore wind farms to the mainland, and the proposed complex will feature a 200-meter-high tower for stretching and sheathing the cables. The tower will undoubtedly become a new Tyneside landmark as it proudly looms above the river.

The project is also expected to create 1500 jobs and puts the Port of Tyne inline with its 2050 net-zero emissions target.

The Port of Tyne has already established itself as a centre for renewable energy, serving as the maintenance base for the Dogger Bank Wind Farm, the world’s largest offshore wind project.

The scheme still requires planning consent from local authorities.
