The Pride of the Tyne
Cranes loom the skyline
Over the river
In sunsets of orange and flame
Ghosts walk the cobbles
Cold in the mornings
Of merchant ships sailing
The river
Again
Fishermen’s hands
Tell of the sea
And the gods that they pray to in storms
And the ferry
Sews stitches
The Pride of the Tyne
As we file in a line
To get home
Townhouse and gable
Tumbling down
To the river
And out to the sea
A fret hung in morning
Is burned by the sun
And the pride of the Tyne
Forged of steel
Carries on

This poem was in reply to a Facebook post in April 2023 from The Shields Ferry marking the 30th birthday of Pride of the Tyne. ‘Pride’ was the last ship to be built at Swan Hunter.
