This is a Saxon stone that may have originally formed the main shaft of the village cross. The story goes that a monk stole a pigβs head from Delaval Hall as he was travelling around the area. The head of the Delaval family caught up with him on horseback and beat him to death inside the Priorβs land. Lord Delaval had to repent for his sins and spent the rest of his life trying to make amends for this crime.
